앞서 언급했던 것처럼 요즘 데어데블(Daredevil) 시즌 1을 보고 있다.
한 참 시간이 지났는데 진도가 나가지 않는 이유는 요즘 시간이 있을 때 미드를 보기 보다는 블로그를 하는데 더 많은 시간을 할애하고 있기 때문이다.
지난 주말에는 배낭여행 포스트 중에 몇 개를 영문으로 바꾸었다.
이쯤에서 다시 데어데블 이야기로 넘어가 보자.
작가 또는 극본을 쓴 사람이, 짧은 대사로 촌철살인을 하기 보다는 긴 대사나 나레이션에서 마음을 사로잡는 이야기가 한다.
시즌 1, 8편(47:26 ~ 48:47)
'You get what you deserve.'
It's an old saying.
One that survived the years, because it's true.
For the most part.
But not for everyone.
Some get more than they deserve.
Because they believe they aren't like everyone else.
That the rules, the ones people like me and you, the people that work and struggle to live our lives, just live, don't apply to them.
That they can do anything and live happily ever after, while the rest of us suffer.
They do this from the shadows.
Shadows that we cast.
With our indifference.
With a pervasive lack of interest in anything that doesn't directly affect us, we, in the here and now.
Or maybe it's just the shadow of weariness.
Of how tired we are, struggling to claw our way back to a middle class that no longer exist, because of those who take more than they deserve.
And they keep taking, until all that's left for the rest of us is a memory of how it used to be before the corporations and the bottom line decided we didn't matter anymore.
But we do.
You and I, the people of this city... we still matter.
킹핀(여기서는 Wilson Fisk, 아들녀석이 자꾸 킹핀이라고 해서... 나도 킹핀이 더 익숙해 졌음)이 자신의 정체를 철저히 감추면서 살인과 악행을 일삼자, Murdock과 Ben이 대화를 나누는 과정에서 그의 정체를 드려내야 할 필요를 느낀다.
그래서 Ben이 킹핀에 정체를 드러내는 내용의 위와 같은 기사를 준비한다. 물론 우연의 일치로 킹핀이 전면에 나서는 것으로 태세를 전환하면서 이 기사는 빛을 볼 수 없게 되어 버리지만 말이다.
"You get what you deserve."를 보니, 떠오르는 비슷한 표현이 있다. "You get what you pay for."
기사의 내용을 간단하게 요약하자면...
우리의 무관심으로 드리워진 그늘에 숨어서 못된 짓을 하면서 더 많은 것을 누리는 사람들이 있고...
그로 인해서 그저 자신에 삶을 살아가는 중산층은 점점 사라지고, 그들은 사람들이 더 이상 신경 쓰지 않는다고 생각을 하고 계속해서 착취를 한다. 하지만 우리는 신경을 쓴다. 당신과 나 이 도시의 사람들... 우리는 아직 신경을 쓴다.
