Dan Brown의 책을 원서로 읽는 건 이번이 두번째이다.
첫번째는 The Da Vinci Code 였는데, 그 때도 간간히 일반적으로 잘 알려져 있지 않은 내용들에 대해서 풀어내는 걸 보면서, 근사하다고 생각했었다. 얼마나 근사한가? 그런 걸 양념 삼아 작품에 뿌려주면서, 독자들로부터 관심과 흥미를 유발해 내면서 스토리를 끌고 나가는 것....
아직은 초반부이긴 하지만, 이 책에서도 미국의 수도인 워싱턴 DC에 있는 의회의사당 지붕 꼭대기에 세워져 있는 '자유의 여신상(the Statue of Freedom)'이 당시에 노예들에 의해서 위로 올려졌다는 아이러니에 대한 이야기가 나온다.
물론 미국인들은 모두 아는 내용일지 모르겠지만, 미국 의회의사당 자체도 낯선 나에게는 신선한 이야기 이다.
