[Falling Leaves - 落葉歸根]

 

I wondered how it was possible that life could go on being so much the same when she was no longer with us. <p39>

 

 

In June or September, when rain cascaded down and wind howled through the streets, I would curse Niang as I struggled along seemingly endless Avenue Joffre, carrying my heavy book bag and sloshing through water at times ankle deep, clinging desperately to a wind-blown umbrella. I also endured the mocking taunts of schoolmates as they gingerly picked their steps along puddle-avoiding wooden planks into waiting cars and whispered among themselves that I boarded my own private 'number eleven tram' daily to school, meaning that my legs carried me.<p53>

 

 

Father's austerity programme extended to every aspect of our daily extension. Lydia and I were not allowed to have long hair or perms, only sensible, clean, old-fashioned haircuts. For the three boys it was much worse. They were forced to have their heads shaved completely bald. This was Father's idea, to impress upon us that life was not a frivolous affair. My brothers became the laughing stock of their entire school, nicknamed (after each fresh head shave) 'the three light bulbs' because of their shiny scalps. <p54> 

 

 

요즘 1930~40년대를 전후해 어린 시절을 보낸 이들의 글을 읽고 있다.

 

그들은 일제시대에 한국과 중국에서 각각 운 좋게도 상당히 유복한 어린 시절을 보냈다.

 

 

하지만, Adeline Yen Mah의 경우는 어린 그녀가 느꼈을 상대적인 상실감이 절망적이었을 것 같다.

 

 

위로 첫째 언니와 세 명의 오빠를 둔 그녀가 태어난 지 얼마 되지 않아서 엄마는 산후 열로 그만 세상을 떠나고, 그로 인해 그녀는 재수(?) 없는 아이로 여겨진다. 그러다가 아버지가 재혼을 하게 되면서, 맞이한 새엄마는 그녀를 딸로 여기기보다는 눈엣가시로만 취급한다. 

 

 

그러다 보니 가정 내에서의 차별은 학교생활에도 그대로 투영되게 된다.

 

처음에 그녀가 쓴 다른 책을 읽었을 때는 그런가 보다 했는데, 이 책에서 상세히 묘사된 그녀의 유년시절을 접하면서... 어린 나이에 어떻게 그 고난을 견뎌냈을까 싶은 놀라움이 든다. 

 

 

하지만, 그녀는 결국 힘든 시기를 이겨내고 자신의 길을 찾아 그녀의 삶을 살게 된다.

 

 

이 책을 읽다 보면... 가슴 아픈 이야기인데... 종종 웃음을 유발하는 부분들을 접한다.

 

 

위에 몇 가지 예가 그런 것이다.

 

분명 사는 시대도, 국가도 다른데... 표현 방식이 어쩌면 그렇게 똑같을 수 있는지...
