Thus we met Nicholas of Morimondo, master glazier of the abbey. He explained to us that in the rear
part of the forge they also blew glass, whereas in this front part, where the smiths worked, the glass
was fixed to the leads, to make windows. But, he added, the great works of stained glass that adorned
the church and the Aedificium had been completed at least two centuries before. Now he and the
others confined themselves to minor tasks, and to repairing the damage of time.
“And with great difficulty,” he added, “because it’s impossible now to find the colors of the old days,
especially the remarkable blue you can still see in the choir, so limpid that, when the sun is high, it
pours a light of paradise into the nave. The glass on the west side of the nave, restored not long ago,
is not of the same quality, and you can tell, on summer days. It’s hopeless,” he went on. “We no longer
have the learning of the ancients, the age of giants is past!”
“We are dwarfs,” William admitted, “but dwarfs who stand on the shoulders of those giants, and small
though we are, we sometimes manage to see farther on the horizon than they.”
우리는 모두 난쟁이입니다. 하지만 거인의 어깨 위에 선 난쟁이들이라면... 비록 작은 우리지만... 때때로 거인들보다 더 멀리 볼 수 있습니다.
그 말의 의미인 즉... 우리는 앞 선 누군가의 지혜와 지식을 배움으로써 더 멀리, 더 가까이, 더 높이, 더 깊이 나아갈 수 있는 것이다.
움베르토 에코(Umberto Eco, 5 January 1932 – 19 February 2016)는 다방면에 해박했던 인문학의 세계적인 거장이자... '장미의 이름'이라는 소설로도 많은 사람들에게 잘 알려져 있다.
학창 시절에 영미문학비평 강의를 들은 적이 있는데, 그때까지는 소설가로만 그를 알고 있던 나는 교재에 종종 등장하는 그가 반가우면서도 신기하게 느껴졌었다.
2019년 3월에 그의 소설을 원작으로 The Name of the Rose라는 8편으로 구성된 미니시리즈가 방송되었는데... 미루고 미루다가 최근에 이를 보게 되었다.
그중에서 흥미로운 대사를 가져와 보았다. 참고로, 위의 인용한 것은 소설에서의 내용이다.
소설의 배경이 14세기인데... 여기에서 언급된 거인의 시대(the age of giants)는 그 이전을 의미하겠지만, 정확하게 언제인지는 분명하지 않다. 어쩌면 앞선 시대에 위대한 족적을 남긴 이들을 모두 아우르는 의미일지도 모르겠다.
그런데, 이와 관련해서 좀 더 알아보니.... 영국의 과학자 아이작 뉴턴(Isaac Newton - 만유인력... 뉴턴의 사과의 그 사람 맞다)이 그의 동료 과학자였던 Robert Hooke에게 보낸 편지에 아래와 같은 문장을 썼다고 한다.
"If I have seen further, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants"
